Why AI agents matter without the hype
Planning
Agents matter for a dull reason: a lot of knowledge work is fetch, check, write it down on a loop. People already do that with tabs and spreadsheets. An agent with tools can take a first pass.
They do not matter because they replace judgment. They matter when:
- The steps are known.
- The tools are real (a filing, a diff, a price page).
- Missing data is allowed to stay missing.
- A human still owns the decision.
They fail in equally dull ways: invented numbers, skipped refusals, a loop that never stops. That is why a marketplace of prompts is useful only if the listing says what the agent may look at and what it must not decide.
No user counts. No 10x story. If the job is not tool-shaped, a chatbot is enough.
